Deschutes River. Heat, Caddis . nuff said....

Except this . The caddis numbers and hatches were ( and sort of still are )  prolific. Try searching in the shadows for rising fish. They may be in super shallow water next to shore or in micro back eddies. If you're in for the nymph game try using a tan emerger as your bottom fly.

Admittedly as August draws nearer the caddis fly activity will probably wane and pmd's and attracter patterns will be more successful. Swinging soft hackles through the deeper tail outs is a viable approach. The steelhead that made it up river earlier in the year are just now starting to show up in the WS/TC section. Still very few but a few is better than none.

The substation fire and longhollow fires were devastating to the  lower river with many of the camps and landmarks burned and destroyed. It will be years before the riparian area of the lower river comes back. In the meantime lets be super vigilant about minimizing the foot print of our campsites.

Crooked River:

With flows still good and the water cool the fishing on the crooked has been excellent. PMD's, small caddis, perdigon style flies for tight line nymphing techniques are all working great. The hatches of p m d's starts in the mid afternoon and can last for a couple of hours. Usually commensurate with the afternoon winds. YAY !
